Sorry for the delay, here are my best shots from the UK, and only a month late. photos are in chronological order though this post and the next one.

Here is an Italian restaurant I ate at the first day in Windsor. The restaurant was cool, the food was terrible.

Here was a great breakfast, they gave me a small jar of honey to pour over it. And it was only 5 pounds ($8!)

Google sketch-up isn't the greatest, but it's kind of fun to play around with. At least it gives you a feel for real flow and scale in the application of an idea.

I left out sky-lights and some other key components of the idea, and a few things aren't strait. Spaces in the back of most rooms are closets/storage etc. the structure in the back is garage and storage...little courtyard in back w/ window to master was my idea, figured it would be nice in summer to have some airflow strait thru from the north. Other than that its a pretty basic 3 bed 2 bath earthship design, w greenhouse that can separate from house by sliding doors (the open spaces in my sketch-up) and large curtained interior windows.

National Franciscan Monastery

Awhile ago Kristin got me a voucher for a photography class in DC (she is the best gift giver). So I took an architectural photography class at the National Franciscan Monastery hidden in an out of the way corner of DC. It was really fun, a beautiful spot, and I learned a ton.

These cloisters surrounded the large garden in front of the monastery, which was nice because it was raining so we could shoot from underneath.

I only shot a couple inside because their were people worshiping and I didn't have a super wide angle lens. Apparently the layout of the center of a monastery is different than that of a cathedral or a church, so there are 4 almost equal sides with an altar in the very center. This shot I actually took before I changed the white balance from cloudy to indoor lighting, but I kinda like the golden glow.

Along the cloisters were these beautiful mosaics of scenes from the life of the Savior. These are a couple of my favorites: The Annunciation and the Garden of Gethsemane.

And of course being a monastery for monks of the Franciscan order, there were 2 large statues of St. Francis in the garden, one in front of a small simple stone chapel.

I went up to the biggest mountain in AZ (Humphrey's peak) with Anna and Asa on Saturday, so I didn't take all the camera gear. This is a 5 shot HDR image that I took without a tripod. You can see a fire in the distance on the left, and I love how you can see the sun shining through the smoke on the right.

I have been processing my pics in Aperture. (thanks dad!) And I have found that its really fun, and works really well for what I need! These pictures are from Tanners actual birthday, when we went to Chili's for Justin's wedding, we let him have cheesecake.

I just "polished" them in aperture, playing with different ways of doing it. I love them!

I use "presets" and then fiddle a bit more with them to get them how I like it.

Saw this online, a company called Big Kahuna out of Oahu sells them. The bottom of theirs is more or less like mine, but I think they used a rubber softer than anything I could find. The slider (/brake) was our idea, we're hoping to be able to lean into turns on the slider...We'll see how it holds up. It's still a work in progress. Ours is about 5'5, that seems really long at first, but once you get going it almost feels like a bit longer would be nicer. Anyhow, it's pretty fun and it's supposed to be a good work out (especially with another person usually sitting on the front.)

Trip to Durango

So we went to Durango for a McKean Family Reunion. Tia was in CO with the fam, so I drove up alone and spent the night at Monument Valley on the UT AZ border. These are some famous formations known as the mittens, because they look like mittens.

Then I went north of Durango near where we camped as a family and found quite a few cool flowers.

...an idea for a kind of Dream House:

I've had this general idea for a house design for awhile. I got to work it through a bit while playing with the free and fun google sketchup.

Master and 2nd bedrooms and an office on west of the house, above that is a large loft and 3rd bedroom.

Above the garage is a complete one bedroom guest house,

with a private entrance from the courtyard and it's own balcony.

Dining room faces east and south, to be able to eat breakfast facing the sun and to get the heat thru the day in the winter. Bedrooms face west to get the last light of day. The courtyard in the center of the house provides cooling breezes and easy access to the outdoor spaces.

Courtyard includes large covered living area, and uncovered areas for grill and garden.

The thermal masses soak up the heat of the sun all day (in winter) and radiate it back thru the house all night.

Doors from the courtyard open up for cooling breezes from the north (in summer).

Simple south orientation and proper eaves make the home very seasonally efficient.
That was kind of the idea that I started the whole thing with.
The eaves block all the direct sunlight in the summer, and let the sun in all day in the winter. The south facing curved glass wall tracks the sun, to maximize heat gain in winter and indirect sunlight in summer.

Tonto National Forest

I went to two different areas in Tonto National Forest yesterday; Tonto Creek and Tonto Natural Bridge State Park.

Tonto Creek is like any small mountain stream, cascading over rocks and falls through the trees.

Then there is Tonto Natural Bridge, which is like nothing else I have ever seen. It is a huge tunnel through the rock, some 400ft long and 200ft tall. There is water flowing through the tunnel, and also off the edge in multiple places.

These last shots are from a hanging garden where the water has a constant flow down the cliff and creates this beautiful wall of green.

A spider anxiously waits for an insect to land on his flower, but was not lucky enough to make his catch while I was there.

There were tons of yellow Columbine flowers, here is one that is just opening.

Skyline Drive runs through the park for over a hundred miles atop the Blue Ridge mountains, 3,000 feet or so above the valley floor. We camped about halfway down the drive near the Big Meadow.

We didn't have to go to far to see the wildlife...

We saw this guy less then a mile or so into our first hike, I think he was just as spooked as we were, but we just kept on walking and he just kept on roaming.

Salome Creek

Here are the best so far from my shots of Salome Creek. Dad will have to post his once he has the time to go through them all.

The stars from near our tent at the bottom of the canyon. The rocks were lit with a headlamp. 25 minute exposure.

Both of us about half way down the canyon about to jump in the water in one of the narrows.

Looking down the canyon with a few hikers, I like how having the people adds to the scale of the canyon.

We waited at this location for a couple of hours until it was in the shade and the sun was reflecting off of the opposite wall. I think it was well worth the wait.

The main event, last time I went we carried rappelling gear for the short cliff, this time we jumped. It was pretty fun.

This is standing in the same location as above, just looking down the canyon. I like the reflection of the cliff on the water.

This is by far my favorite shot. Just a stones through away from the image above, we again waited for the sunlight to be right for the reflection and the shade.

This is a close second for favorite shot of the day. I love the bright cliff in contrast with the dark narrow canyon.

Mom, Dad and Sarah came to AZ so dad and I could go hike Solome Creek. Dad was so excited he could not contain himself, or his bladder.

Great Falls of the Potomac

Went to Great Falls with some friends. The weather was perfect and the hike was nice, and the water was absolutely crazy. Because of all the recent rain the water was at full flood stage, most of the hiking on the Virginia side was closed due to flooding, and both of the hikes to the falls overlooks were closed when we first got there. Luckily they opened they trail to the main overlook while we were there, So we go to go check it out. You hike on these boardwalks and over several bridges that cross these gorges over portions of the falls, the water was gushing and roaring like mad right under us. Then we got to the main falls overlook on this island out in the river. The main channel of the river is a good several hundred yards across at that point, and I think something like a 70 foot drop over several 10-20 foot steps over and around a whole bunch of bus size boulders and chasms and rocky islets. The water was at least 30-40 feet higher than when we went in the fall a few years ago, and most of the boulders and islets where completely covered....it was crazy. Absolutely awesome how powerfully the water was blasting through there.

Across the river you can see several climbing routes, but the little bank you stand on to belay and the bottom third of the routes are completely covered.

Ward Campout

Anna, Asa and I went on the ward campout last night, so of course I took a few night shots. Here is the best one by far. I placed the camera towards our tent and the fire, and didnt tell anyone unless they were about to bump the camera. so it made for some interesting lighting.

Found this a few weeks ago. Probably one of my favorite pictures I ever took. around '96 or so with the K1000. Back in the day when you didn't get too many good ones, because you only had a few roles of 36 in your pocket and it was mucho dinero or mucho stress to process them....So you walked around for hours and hours and when you were out of shots you were out, and you were lucky to get more than a couple good ones.
It was stuffed in an old Tolkien book marking the page of probably one of my favorite poems I ever read (I found the book because I wanted to read the poem to Isaac).
Never was quite sure exactly what that thing was, there were some kids, from a church group or something, setting up a couple of them the day before. Being quite fond of tipis myself, I think I can say it's not much in the way of a tipi, and I don't think they slept in it anyhow.
And I am not sure what or why they put on it that was glimmering so, almost as if a mirror were hung on the east facing side of the thing. I'm sure I would have gone over to take a closer look, but I don't remember what I saw, and this is the only picture I remember ever having of the thing, and the only one from that trip I can find (although I seem to recall another pretty good one, from this trip or another, of the silhouettes of several friends standing with their dune-sleds at the top of a huge dune against an unusually deep blue sky)....

here are the best images from Sedona. all of Cathedral Rock from the same spot, i stood with about 20 photographers that were there as part of a workshop with my guess is a professional. the light was somewhat uneventful at first, and then it dropped below the clouds just as it hit the horizon, and the rocks lit up. It was a great place to be.

We went to Oak Creek canyon to get out of the heat on Friday and Saturday. here is the night shot, more shots to come, once i clear some room on my hard drive so i can load the other pictures.

So here are some pictures i took in the back yard. I had the kids standing in the shade in front of a wall that was in the sunlight. I used the pop up flash, which limits the shutter speed to 1/180 of a second. this makes the sunlit wall go to bright white, which makes for some fun images in the style called high key.

Nature Hike

We went on a little hike on the nature trail with some friends of ours. Our friend Ricky had found this spot just off the trail where you can look back into the woods and see 20 or so Great Blue Heron nests way up in the trees, it was awesome. They were quite aways across the little valley and thru the trees, but you could see a few of the Herons moving around up there and feeding the babies. Luckily I brought the big zoom, so we got a few shots, not the greatest pics but it was pretty cool to see those huge birds in their nests.

On the way to see the birds we saw a lot of interesting things. I'm not sure if it's because he was a Marine or because he grew up around here, but Ricky can spot all kinds of interesting critters and creatures.....

Look close and you can see the frog jumping out of Isaac's hands and onto his shirt.

A snail and a skull fragment, Isaac guessed it was a baby deer, and insisted on bringing it home.

Barely got the camera out before he slithered away...

Of course after several minutes with the camera to my eye watching the birds just stand there, as soon as I put the camera down a bird takes off. Luckily I had handed the camera to Ricky. He got the best shot of the day.

It was quite impressive, even from that far away you could hear the power of his wings as he hovered over the nest and set down carefully in the tree.

Family Portrait Session

I recently obtained a master flash(580), and two slaves(430). I am doing some studying for Dad to learn how they work together and separately.

I recruited several families in our ward to practice different techniques on, and I had my first photo shoot on Saturday.

These were taken in downtown Columbus. I had on my new portrait lens and the master flash, with a cover on it. (to expand the light of the flash and make it wider).

Clear skies, and low ambient light are rare occurrences in this part of the country, but tonight I got lucky. And I learned that the bright red star (8th brightest in the northern sky) in Orion's shoulder (my favorite constellation, always nice to see him up there, guardian of the night sky) is the infamous Betelgeuse. (not to be confused with the equally cool ghost with the most beetlejuice)

Peter's Canyon

I went to Peter's canyon on Saturday, it is a 6 mile hike with no trail, just a walk up a river bed over large boulders.

Kind of an interesting story. I was just leaving antelope island driving across the causeway back to town and this huge herd of cattle was being led down the way by these real classic looking cowboys, the one in white is a for real Marlboro man (look close he's even got a dwindling cigarette in his fingers). I was stuck for a good extra 40 minutes on that 7 mile causeway (which ended up making me very late for a church meeting).

Classic as even Utah is, I don't think that is something you see every day. On my way out to the island several hours earlier I had seen these groups of miraged figures that I thought could have been men, animals or trees way out on the lake bed towards one of the smaller islands. I also saw 3 guys and a couple dogs trudging across the lake bed that day.

I figure some old rancher had a herd of cattle out there, and he finally decided to take advantage of the extreme low water and bring his cattle back to the mainland.

What ever it was it was pretty cool....that place never did cease to amaze me.
